When is the best time to start planning your tax bill?
The best time to plan your tax bill isn't in January. Start early and you'll have more options — and potentially a smaller bill.
Tax planning is a year-round activity
Ask most self-employed people and landlords when they think about their tax bill, and the answer is January — the filing and payment deadline. But by then, the tax year is over and most of your planning options have closed.
The reality is that the best time to plan your tax is now — at the start of, or during, the tax year.
Why starting early matters
Most tax-saving options must be exercised during the tax year:
- Pension contributions must be paid by the tax year end to count against that year’s income.
- Gift Aid donations need to be made in-year.
- Capital gains tax planning — such as using your annual exempt amount or transferring assets between spouses — can’t be retro-fitted after the disposal has happened.
- Choosing the right business structure, or making changes to it, is far easier to do before the year is over.
Once the year ends, your only remaining lever is how the return itself is prepared and submitted — not what income and gains are reported.
When to review
At the start of the new tax year (April)
The ideal moment. New-year allowances are reset, and you can set up pensions, ISAs and business structures for the year ahead.
Mid-year (Autumn)
A half-year review catches things while there’s still time to act — for example, a big profit year where a pension contribution makes sense.
November/December
A final window. There’s still time for some actions, and it’s the moment to make sure you’ll meet the January deadline comfortably.
January (and beyond)
Deadline month. Good for submitting and paying — but the planning opportunities for the closed year are largely gone.
Planning as a professional
Tax planning is about understanding the whole picture: your income, your business, your family, your plans. It’s rarely about a single clever trick — it’s about doing the straightforward, legitimate things at the right time.
That’s exactly what we do for clients. We meet them during the year — not just at filing time — so their planning is done with options still open.
